Avocado Blt Recipe
One of my favorite versions of the classic sandwich is the Avocado BLT. Creamy avocado takes the place of the classic sandwich filling to boost the dish’s overall nutritional profile.
Unlike bacon, which offers mainly protein and fat, avocado is a superior source of healthy fats, vitamins, and fiber. I usually make this sandwich using one of two types of bread: whole grain or sourdough.
Both add a wonderful texture to the sandwich. I always select a ripe avocado, not just for its buttery texture but because it delivers a wallop of heart-healthy monounsaturated fats.
My bacon of choice is always crispy, adding an irresistible crunch that perfectly complements the juicy, fresh tomato slices. Tomatoes are a fantastic source of vitamin C and antioxidants.
They are a perfect pairing with the handful of fresh lettuce leaves, which deliver a crisp, light, and slightly sweet taste, along with a decent dose of vitamins A and K. A tablespoon of mayonnaise or aioli does add a tangy creaminess, tying all the flavors together.
From time to time, however, I like to add a squeeze of lemon juice to the avocado for an extra bright kick. Is this a nutritional powerhouse?
It sure is. Each bite is a delightful balance of textures and nutrition, making this a great option for a satisfying meal.
Ingredients
An avocado that is ripe: Filled with fats and fibers that are good for your health, the creamy texture boosts flavor.
Whole Grain or Sourdough Bread: Offers carbohydrates and fiber—a substantial and sour base.
Bacon: Provides protein, and imparts a savory flavor.
It is crispy, and it is indulgent.
Tomato: Plump and vitamin-rich, add a refreshing squeeze of slight acidity.
Crisp and hydrating, fresh lettuce leaves are abundant in vitamins and have the perfect texture for salads.
Aioli or Mayonnaise: Adds a creamy texture, richness, and a hint of tang.
Ingredient Quantities
- 2 slices of whole grain or sourdough bread
- 1 ripe avocado
- 4 slices of bacon
- 1 medium tomato, sliced
- Handful of fresh lettuce leaves
- 1 tablespoon mayonnaise or aioli
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Optional: a squeeze of lemon juice
Instructions
1. A skillet should be preheated over medium heat before the bacon slices are added. They will need to cook until they are crispy, and once they are done, they should be transferred to a plate that has been lined with paper towels. The paper towel is there to soak up any grease the bacon might still be holding.
2. As the bacon cooks, scoop out the avocado flesh into a bowl and mash it with a fork. Add salt, pepper, and a squirt of lemon juice to taste. Stir it well and serve.
3. Whole grain or sourdough bread slices can be toasted to your preferred level of crispiness.
4. On one side of each toasted slice of bread, spread a layer of mayonnaise or aioli.
5. On one slice of bread, layer the mashed avocado. Then add tomato slices, followed by crispy bacon and then fresh lettuce.
6. Put the second slice of bread, with mayonnaise on it, on top of the sandwich.
7. If you wish, cut the sandwich in two and serve it without delay. Relish your delectable Avocado BLT!
